US Sailing Certifications: Basic Keelboat, Cruising, and Navigation instructor;  US Sailing Basic Keelboat Instructor Trainer, Catamaran Instructor

I am a Seattle native who began sailing dinghies as a kid in the San Juan Islands. Since that time I have sailed most of the Salish Sea as a cruiser. I learned how much I enjoyed sharing my passion for sailing when I volunteered to teach at the Center for Wooden Boats, in their SailNOW program. When I am not sailing I like to build small boats (up to 20′ as that is what I can fit in the garage), SCUBA diving, reading, and camping with my family.

I have been a club member since 2003 and an instructor since 2007.

Time with Windworks: Since 1996
Licenses: USCG Master License 50T inland water, OUPV near coastal waters.
US Sailing Certificates: Basic Keelboat, Basic Cruising,

Bareboat Cruising, Basic Powerboat Cruising, Catamaran Instructor
I started sailing in Newport Beach at the age of 7, crewing for my father on a 16ft Windmill that he built in our garage. My father changed boats every couple of years, therefore I was able to crew for him on many types and sizes. After High School, I spent 4 years in the Navy as a Signalman and traveled the world. In 1994, I began to teach sailing in Berkley CA, at Olympic Circle Sailing Center (OCSC). There, I earned my US Sailing BK certification. In 1996 I moved to Seattle and hooked up with Windworks and have been happy here ever since.

US Sailing Certifications: Basic Keelboat, Basic Cruising, Bareboat Cruising

I got hooked on sailing when I was a kid at summer camp, and also helping family friends cruise their boats around the East Coast, especially Rhode Island and Long Island Sound. In 1986 I was backpacking through Spain and ended up jumping on a boat sailing from Gibraltar to the Bahamas! What an adventure. Later I spent about 15 years crewing on big boats in local and national aces. Best professional achievements would be winning three National Championships on Samba Pa Ti or teaching at the Naval Academy every summer, what an honor. Probably some of the most fun I ever had sailing was racing big boats in Seattle and making (talking) my way onto some fast boats, and I also have a vague memory of skimming across the water on a Sailfish off Cape Cod.

When I was 15 years old, I discovered my love for boats while sailing off the California coast in the Channel Islands. In my opinion, it’s a great way to relax. And as a teenager, it was a nice escape from homework and school. In the beginning, I sailed small dinghies and Hobie cats, but in my years, I have sailed on a Vagabond 14 Hobie 16, San Juan 24 for 5 years with CYC, and the camaraderie and sunsets I’ve encountered are amazing. I now love gunkholing year round from Desolation sound to Tacoma. My teaching career started at Mount Baker ski area teaching skiing and snowboarding and I learned that I enjoy teaching others, so I moved to teaching people how to sail. I do a fair amount of yacht deliveries and I currently have a 50 ton Coast Guard license and hope to get my hundred ton master soon.

Every year I help sailors and power boaters enjoy new cruising destinations through flotillas to the San Juan Islands, Catalina Island, and up the Inside Passage to Alaska. When not teaching sailing, I work to promote boating safety, women in boating, and STEM/marine science education for kids.

I recall someone stating that the sea has the same salt content as human blood. I found some truth in that 30 years ago on a Sunfish, and have required frequent transfusions ever since. Soon after my initial club membership in 2001, the staff of Windworks fueled that dependency by asking me to teach sailing, luring others to the windsong of the sirens. I’m an admitted sailaholic and will do my best to make you an addict when we harness the wind together. Come sail, after all, any disaster survived makes a good story.

tim-evans

Sailing Instructor – Tim Evans

Time with Windworks: Since late 1990s

Licenses: USCG OUPV license

US Sailing Certification: Basic Keelboat

I joined WWSC in the late 90s, as a club member, later a boat owner. I have had two boats in the club, currently the Dufour 325, Sleipnir. I have been an instructor since 2010 with a USCG OUPV license and US Sailing basic keelboat instructor certification.
I began sailing in junior high school when my father and I built a small sailboat. I bought myself a couple of sailing books and taught myself to sail. I sailed on inland lakes in Michigan , Lake Michigan, and some along the Florida keys . Then college, post-graduate training, and early working years interfered. I returned to sailing after moving to Seattle and appreciate what terrific sailing we have here in the PNW. It is a pleasure to be able help others to enjoy what we have on the waters of Puget Sound.

Upon moving the the Northwest, I eagerly embraced the cruising opportunities of the Salish Sea. My US SAILING duties take me to other parts of the country, as well. At home on Whidbey Island, I enjoy a powerboat for fishing and crabbing. In my other life, I’m a photographer for publication and fine art.
